In particular, we now put the cli in place as `bin/zed` and the zed

ping #6687
This is the third iteration of this PR ([v2
here](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/11949)) and uses a
different approach to the first two (the process wrapper lib was a
maintainability nightmare). While the first two attempted to spawn the
necessary processes using flatpak-spawn and host-spawn from the app
inside the sandbox, this version first spawns the cli binary which then
restart's itself *outside* of the sandbox using flatpak-spawn. The
restarted cli process than can call the bundled app binary normally,
with no need for flatpak-spawn because it is already outside of the
sandbox. This is done instead of keeping the cli in the sandbox because
ipc becomes very difficult and broken when trying to do it across the
sandbox.

Update macOS Development Documentation with Dispatch.h Error Solution
### Description
This PR updates the macOS development documentation to include a
solution for the `dispatch/dispatch.h` file not found error. This error
is encountered during local development when using the `cargo run`
command. The documentation now includes steps to ensure the Xcode
command line tools are properly installed and set, and instructions to
set the `BINDGEN_EXTRA_CLANG_ARGS` environment variable.
### Changes

This will throw off the past results for accepted / dismissed that I was
wanting to use to evaluate Supermaven quality, by comparing its rate
with copilot's rate.
I'm not super thrilled with this fix, but I think it'll do. In the
`supermaven_completions_provider`, we check if there's a `completion_id`
before sending either an accepted or discard completion event. I don't
see a similar construct in the `copilot_completions_provider` to
piggyback off of, so I begrudgingly introduced
`should_allow_event_to_send` and had it follow the same pattern that
`completion_id` does. Maybe there's a better way?

This PR adds a Prompt Library to Zed, powering custom prompts and any
default prompts we want to package with the assistant.
These are useful for:
- Creating a "default prompt" - a super prompt that includes a
collection of things you want the assistant to know in every
conversation.
- Adding single prompts to your current context to help guide the
assistant's responses.
- (In the future) dynamically adding certain prompts to the assistant
based on the current context, such as the presence of Rust code or a
specific async runtime you want to work with.
These will also be useful for populating the assistant actions typeahead
we plan to build in the near future.
## Prompt Library
The prompt library is a registry of prompts. Initially by default when
opening the assistant, the prompt manager will load any custom prompts
present in your `~/.config/zed/prompts` directory.
Checked prompts are included in your "default prompt", which can be
inserted into the assitant by running `assistant: insert default prompt`
or clicking the `Insert Default Prompt` button in the assistant panel's
more menu.
When the app starts, no prompts are set to default. You can add prompts
to the default by checking them in the Prompt Library.
I plan to improve this UX in the future, allowing your default prompts
to be remembered, and allowing creating, editing and exporting prompts
from the Library.
### Creating a custom prompt
Prompts have a simple format:
```json
{
// ~/.config/zed/prompts/no-comments.json
"title": "No comments in code",
"version": "1.0",
"author": "Nate Butler <iamnbutler@gmail.com>",
"languages": ["*"],
"prompt": "Do not add inline or doc comments to any returned code. Avoid removing existing comments unless they are no longer accurate due to changes in the code."
}
```
Ensure you properly escape your prompt string when creating a new prompt
file.
Example:
```json
{
// ...
"prompt": "This project using the gpui crate as it's UI framework for building UI in Rust. When working in Rust files with gpui components, import it's dependencies using `use gpui::{*, prelude::*}`.\n\nWhen a struct has a `#[derive(IntoElement)]` attribute, it is a UI component that must implement `RenderOnce`. Example:\n\n```rust\n#[derive(IntoElement)]\nstruct MyComponent {\n id: ElementId,\n}\n\nimpl MyComponent {\n pub fn new(id: impl Into<ElementId>) -> Self {\n Self { id.into() }\n }\n}\n\nimpl RenderOnce for MyComponent {\n fn render(self, cx: &mut WindowContext) -> impl IntoElement {\n div().id(self.id.clone()).child(text(\"Hello, world!\"))\n }\n}\n```"
}
This PR adds cursor markers to the scrollbar. They work similar to
VSCode:
1. A cursor marker takes the whole scrollbar width.
2. It's always 2px high.
3. It uses the player's `cursor` color, so it may be helpful in the
collaboration mode.
There's a setting to switch cursor markers on/off:
```json
{
"scrollbar": {
"cursors": true
}
}
```
Implementation details:
- Unlike other markers, cursor markers are displayed synchronously.
Otherwise they don't feel smooth and sometimes freez on prolonged
up/down navigation.
- Cursor markers are automatically switched off when it's more than 100
of them.
- The minimum (non-cursor) marker height is now 5px. It allows the user
to see other markers under the cursor marker.
- The way the minimum height is imposed on markers has changed a bit to
keep consistency between markers of different types.
- Selected symbol markers use less vibrant color (`info` faded out a
little).
Release Notes:
- Added displaying of cursor markers in the scrollbar. They can be
switched on/off by the `scrollbar.cursors` setting.
### Why?
I don't tend to use the Project Panel, but use a keyboard shortcut to
more than visual clutter. Additionally, there is precedent for this
configurability with other panels (collaboration, chat, notification,
terminal, etc).
* Updates the docs to use a proper max value for the centered layout
padding (0.4 instead of 0.45)
* Makes the `center` wrapper (`h_flex`) to be of size of the `center`
element always, to ensure terminal lines are displayed correctly
The letter fix is somewhat hacky: while it does the right thing right
now, it does not prevent us from future mistakes like these, and does
not explain why the bottom dock could be of one, smaller, height, and
its contents, the terminal pane/terminal element/something else would
think that it has a larger height, thus breaking the scrolling and
rendering.
Zed displays scrollbar markers of three types: git diffs, background
highlights and diagnostics. At the moment, the "background highlights"
markers are displayed for all the supported highlights:
- Occurences of the symbol under cursor.
- Search results.
- Scope boundaries (only works when a symbol is selected).
- Active hover popover position.
They all use the same color, which leads to confusing results. For
instance, in the following case I expect to see markers for the
`new_anchor` occurences in lines 43 and 47. But besides them, there're
also scope-markers for `ScrollAnchor` initialization block in lines 46
and 49, which makes me think that there're four places where
`new_anchor` appears.
- [x] Single click on project file opens tab as preview
- [x] Double click on item in project panel opens tab as permanent
- [x] Double click on the tab makes it permanent
- [x] Navigating away from the tab makes the tab permanent and the new
tab is shown as preview (e.g. GoToReference)
- [x] Existing preview tab is reused when opening a new tab
- [x] Dragging tab to the same/another panel makes the tab permanent
- [x] Opening a tab from the file finder makes the tab permanent
- [x] Editing a preview tab will make the tab permanent
- [x] Using the space key in the project panel opens the tab as preview
- [x] Handle navigation history correctly (restore a preview tab as
preview as well)
- [x] Restore preview tabs after restarting
- [x] Support opening files from file finder in preview mode (vscode:
Completes #7228.
Adds back Backspace as the main delete key binding and makes Linux
bindings consistent with macOS
Release Notes:
- ⌘-Delete/⌘-Backspace will now suppress deletion confirmation prompts
in project panel
([#7228](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/7228)).
This PR adjusts our docs to use plain Markdown quotes for callouts.
This Markdown gets rendered in a number of different locations:
- GitHub
- zed.dev
- mdBook
As such, we should use Markdown that is supported by all three.
Closes#5178
Release Notes:
- Added a `file_types` setting that can be used to associate languages
with file names and file extensions. For example, to interpret all `.c`
files as C++, and files called `MyLockFile` as TOML, add the following
to `settings.json`:
```json
{
"file_types": {
"C++": ["c"],
"TOML": ["MyLockFile"]
}
}
```
As with most zed settings, this can be configured on a per-directory
basis by including a local `.zed/settings.json` file in that directory.
This PR adds settings for hiding title (breadcrumbs) from the terminal
toolbar. If the title is hidden, the toolbar disappears completely.
Example:
```json
"terminal": {
"toolbar": {
"title": true,
}
}
```
[The PR that added the "toolbar"
setting](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/7338) didn't affect
toolbars of the terminals that are placed in the editor pane. This PR
fixes that.
Release Notes:
- Added support for configuring the terminal toolbar ([8125](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/8125))
I'm not sure how compliant you're aiming to be with vim, but the `f`
behavior is more useful when it can search on multiple lines instead of
a single one, so I'd like to propose this change.
This change is quite frequent in vim/neovim as a plugin (e.g.
[clever-f](https://github.com/VSCodeVim/Vim),
[improved-ft](https://github.com/backdround/improved-ft.nvim), etc), and
in other vim emulations (e.g.
[vscode-vim](https://github.com/VSCodeVim/Vim)).
I think this makes it less chaotic to edit text when the inlay hints are
on.
It's for cases where you're editing to the right side of an inlay hint.
Example:
```rust
for name in names.iter().map(|item| item.len()) {
println!("{:?}", name);
}
```
We display a `usize` inlay hint right next to `name`.
But as soon as you remove that `.` in `names.iter` your cursor jumps
around because the inlay hint has been removed.
With this change we now have a 700ms debounce before we update the inlay
hints.
VS Code seems to have an even longer debounce, I think somewhere around
~1s.
Release Notes:
- Added debouncing to make it easier to edit text when inlay hints are
enabled and to save rendering of inlay hints when scrolling. Both
debounce durations can be configured with `{"inlay_hints":
{"edit_debounce_ms": 700}}` (default) and `{"inlay_hints":
{"scroll_debounce_ms": 50}}`. Set a value to `0` to turn off the
debouncing.
Hints are still disabled by default in Zed, but when those get enabled,
the language server settings allow to display those instantly without
further server configuration, which might be not obvious. Also add the
documentation enties for those settings and their defaults in Zed.
Hi folks! @absynce and I paired a bit to improve the
`elm-language-server` configuration. We have realised that sometimes
`elm-language-server` settings were being reset to default. We had been
configuring `elm-language-server` like this:
```json
"lsp": {
"elm-language-server": {
"initialization_options": {
"disableElmLSDiagnostics": true,
"onlyUpdateDiagnosticsOnSave": true,
"elmReviewDiagnostics": "warning"
}
}
}
```
And then we noticed that the following communication happened:
```
// Send:
{"jsonrpc":"2.0","method":"workspace/didChangeConfiguration","params":{"settings":{}}}
// Receive:
{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":5,"method":"workspace/configuration","params":{"items":[{"section":"elmLS"}]}}
// Send:
{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":5,"result":[null],"error":null}
```
In `elm-language-server` the settings from `didChangeConfiguration`
[replace the initial
settings](edd6813388/src/common/providers/diagnostics/diagnosticsProvider.ts (L188)).
Setting the value to `{}` effectively resets the configuration options
to defaults.
In Zed, `initialization_options` and `workspace_configuration` are two
different things, but in `elm-language-server` they are coupled.
Additionally, `elm-language-server` is requesting workspace
configuration for the `elmLS` section that doesn't exist.
This PR:
1. Fixes settings reset on `didChangeConfiguration` by populating
`workspace_configuration` from `initialization_options`
2. Makes workspace configuration requests work by inserting an extra
copy of the settings under the `elmLS` key in `workspace_configuration`
— this is a bit ugly, but we're not sure how to make both kinds of
configuration messages work in the current setup.
This is how communication looks like after the proposed changes:
```
// Send:
{
"jsonrpc": "2.0",
"method": "workspace/didChangeConfiguration",
"params": {
"settings": {
"disableElmLSDiagnostics": true,
"onlyUpdateDiagnosticsOnSave": true,
"elmReviewDiagnostics": "warning",
"elmLS": {
"disableElmLSDiagnostics": true,
"onlyUpdateDiagnosticsOnSave": true,
"elmReviewDiagnostics": "warning"
}
}
}
}
// Receive:
{
"jsonrpc": "2.0",
"id": 4,
"method": "workspace/configuration",
"params": {
"items": [
{
"section": "elmLS"
}
]
}
}
// Send:
{
"jsonrpc": "2.0",
"id": 4,
"result": [
{
"disableElmLSDiagnostics": true,
"onlyUpdateDiagnosticsOnSave": true,
"elmReviewDiagnostics": "warning"
}
],
"error": null
}
```
Things we have considered:
1. Extracting the `elm-language-server` settings into a separate
section: we haven't found this being widely used in Zed, seems that all
language server configuration should fall under the top level `lsp`
section
2. Changing the way `elm-language-server` configuration works:
`elm-language-server` has got integrations with multiple editors,
changing the configuration behaviour would mean updating all the
existing integrations. Plus we are not exactly sure if it's doing
anything wrong.
Adds settings for hiding breadcrumbs and quick action bar from
the editor toolbar. If both elements are hidden, the toolbar disappears
completely.
Example:
```json
"toolbar": {
"breadcrumbs": true,
"quick_actions": false
}
```
- It intentionally doesn't hide breadcrumbs in other views (for
instance, in the search result window) because their usage there differ
from the main editor.
- The editor controls how breadcrumbs are displayed in the toolbar, so
implementation differs a bit for breadcrumbs and quick actions bar.
Release Notes:
- Added support for configuring the editor toolbar ([4756](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/4756))
This pull request implements the following documentation changes:
- [x] Copy existing language settings docs from old docs repo
- [x] Add new pages for Zig, Haskell, Gleam, Deno and PureScript
- [x] Add `rust-analyzer` target directory section to Rust language page
Release Notes:
- Added initial language settings documentation
I got stuck on the "Getting started" page because I was trying to use
the shortcut `⌘+,` and not `⌘,`. This PR removes the `+`'s to make the
shortcuts clearer to the reader.
Was running into an issue building live_kit_server after a fresh clone
due to missing dependencies for build.rs. The use of git submodules
wasn't currently documented.
* Use the impersonator id to prevent these tokens from counting against
the impersonated user when limiting the users' total of access tokens.
* When connecting using an access token with an impersonator add the
impersonator as a field to the tracing span that wraps the task for that
connection.
* Disallow impersonating users via the admin API token in production,
because when using the admin API token, we aren't able to identify the
impersonator.
Adding the typos crate to our CI will take some doing, as we have
several tests which rely on typos in various ways (e.g. checking state
as the user types), but I thought I'd take a first stab at fixing what
it finds.
When testing Zed locally, it's rarely necessary to log in the real with,
via Zed.dev and GitHub. We usually use `zed-local`. Since zed.dev is not
going to be open source (at least right away), this PR removes it from
our local development workflow.
* Remove zed.dev from the Procfile
* Change the `seed` script to not create an admin user for your
signed-in github user
* Instead have both `zed-local` and the `seed` script read from an
`.admins.json` file, which the user can create in order to customize who
they sign in as when running `zed-local`.
* Update all of the docs for building and developing zed.
