380e204e73 test: use test backend in most remaining tests too
I don't think the backend should matter for any of these tests, so
let's test with only one, and let's make that the strictest one - the
new test backend.

This reduces the number of tests by 74 (from 974 to 900), but saves no
measurable run time.

f39b0d24c8 tests: use test backend in working copy tests, fix MergedTree bug
Only tests dealing with Git submodules care about the backend type.

Switching the tests to use the test backend also uncovered another bug
in `MergedTree`, so I fixed that too. The bug only happens with legacy
trees (path-level conflicts) and backends that care about the conflict
path, so it wouldn't happen with Git backends, and it wouldn't happen
at Google either (because we use tree-level conflicts).

0f7054e8c3 tests: wherever we test with only one backend, use the test backend
I don't think there's any reason to use the local backend in tests
instead of using the stricter test backend.

I think we should generally use the test backend in tests and only use
the local backend or git backend when there's a particular reason to
do so (such as in `test_bad_locking` where the on-disk directory
structure matters). But this patch only deals with the simpler cases
where we were only testing with the local backend.

63ba2a6346 tests: add a strict backend for use in tests
We ran into a bug in `MergedTree` with our commit backend at
Google. The problem there was that `MergedTree` sometimes uses the
wrong path when reading files and trees. We didn't catch the bug in
our tests (outside of Google) because both our backends let you read
files and trees at any path.

This commit introduces a stricter backend that we can use in tests to
catch this kind of bug. For simplicity, it stores all data in
memory. Since tests are short-lived, I think that should be fine.

For now, this backend is stricter only in that it doesn't mix objects
written to different paths. We can make it strict/lossy in other ways
later (e.g. modifying written commit objects).

I think having a backend designed for tests can also be useful for
later making it possible to control the backend, e.g. to inject
errors.

We may want to replace almost all uses of the local backend in tests
with uses of this new test backend.

9c30d7500b testutils: delete bool-typed init() in favor of enum-typed version
It makes the call sites clearer if we pass the `TestRepoBackend` enum
instead of the boolean `use_git` value. It's also more extensible (I
plan to add another backend for tests).

79527d707c testutils: use .jj-internal git repos in most tests
I don't think there's much reason to run most tests with a `.git`
directory outside of `.jj`. I think it's just that way for historical
reasons. It's been that way since I added support for `.jj`-internal
repos in a8a9f7dedd.

The reason I want to switch is to make it a little easier to create
test repos for different backends. The problem with `.jj`-external git
repos is that they depend on an additional path.

I had to update `test_bad_locking.rs` to make the code merging
directories able handle missing directories on some side, because
git's loose objects result in directories getting created on one or
both sides.

d9ce70c176 tests: make create_tree() return MergedTree
I think most tests want a `MergedTree`, so this makes `create_tree()`
return that. I kept the old function as `create_single_tree()`. That's
now only used in `test_merge_trees` and `test_merged_tree`.

I also consistently imported the functions now, something I've
considered doing for a long time.

1633eccdca Use { workspace = true } to appease VS Code's Cargo.toml parser
The VS Code "Better TOML" plugin (which I think most of our VS Code developers use?) doesn't support the `x.y = z` syntax at the top level, even though it's valid TOML.

This is also useful if we ever want to add additional properties in different sub-crates (although unlikely for the near future).

13fff3be70 cargo: unify dependency versions through workspace deps
Summary: This moves all dependencies across the jj-lib and jj-cli crates into
the top-level Cargo file; with that, we can change each crate instead to just
inherit the workspace version, with the toggled features enabled, by setting
a dependency such as:

    dep.workspace = true

in the relevant Cargo.toml file.

This doesn't actually change any of the build semantics (from what I can tell)
nor the lockfile, and seems to respond normally. There are more cleanups that
can follow.

Two notes:

- Dependabot seems to work fine, based on what I've seen in other repos.
- `cargo add` doesn't seem to know how to add packages to a top-level
  `workspace.dependencies` field; instead you can `cargo add -p jj-cli`
  and move the entries, at least.

3ef552c4c1 tests: add TestWorkspace::snapshot() to simplify snapshotting
It's currently a bit complicated to snapshot the working copy and
there's a lot of duplication in tests. This commit introduces a
function to simplify it. I made the function snapshot the working copy
and save the updated state. Some of the tests I changed previously
discarded the changes instead of saving them, but I think they all did
so because it was simpler. I left a few call sites unchanged because
they make concurrent changes.

4f30417ffd merged_tree: introduce a type for a set of trees to merge on the fly
In order to store conflicts in the commit, as conflicts between a set
of trees, we want to be able merge those trees on the fly. This
introduces a type for that. It has a `Merge(Conflict(Tree))` variant,
where the individual trees cannot have path-level conflicts. It also
has a `Legacy(Tree)` variant, which does allow path-level conflicts. I
think that should help us with the migration.

Almost everyone calls the project "jj", and there seeems to be

Once we've published a 0.8.0 under the new names, we'll release 0.7.1
versions under the old names with pointers to the new crates names.

cf8a0466c4 backend: introduce error types specific to init/load phases
Errors that may occur while loading backend would vary per backends, and
it's unlikely that these errors could be mapped to BackendError variants
other than BackendError::Other. So let's extract Other(_) of that kind as
a separate type to clarify there would be no other error variants.

Perhaps, Backend/Error will be renamed to CommitBackend/Error or
CommitStore/Error?, whereas I think BackendInit/LoadError can be shared
among store factories.

86b6a11e63 Fix jj init --git-repo fails and leaves broken .jj folder
This commit fixes #1305

Before this commit, running `jj init --git-repo=./` in a folder that
does not have a .git would cause jj to panick and leave an unfinished corrupted jj repo.

This commit fixes that by changing the call chain to return an error
instead of calling .unwrap() and panicking. This commit also adds logic to delete the unfinished jj
repository when the git backend initialization failed.

Before this commit, running the above command would result in the following
```
Running `jj/target/debug/jj init --git-repo=./`
thread 'main' panicked at 'called `Result::unwrap()` on an `Err` value: Error { code: -3, klass: 2, message: "failed to resolve path '/Users/kevincliao/github/jj/test-repo/.jj/repo/store/../../../.git': No such file or directory" }', lib/src/git_backend.rs:83:75
note: run with `RUST_BACKTRACE=1` environment variable to display a backtrace
```

After this commit, the result is the following and the jj repo is deleted:
```
Running `jj/target/debug/jj init --git-repo=./`
Error: Failed to access the repository: Error: Failed to open git repository: failed to resolve path '/Users/kevincliao/github/jj/test-repo/.jj/repo/store/../../../.git': No such file or directory; class=Os (2); code=NotFound (-3)
f1d7bbe508 testutils: create a function for writing a random commit to MutableRepo
We already have `create_random_commit()`, which returns a
`CommitBuilder`. Most callers directly write that to a
`MutableRepo`. That currently returns a `Commit`, but I'm about to
make it propagate errors from the backend. That would add an
`unwrap()` to this sequence, making it longer. Let's create a simple
helper for these callers to simplify this common pattern.
49b2f3b6ca commit_builder: keep MutableRepo reference
When you're done with the `CommitBuilder`, you're going to have to
call `write_to_repo()`, passing it a mutable `MutableRepo`
reference. It's a bit simpler to pass that reference when we create
the `CommitBuilder` instead, so that's what this patch does.
A drawback of passing in the mutable reference when we create the
builder is that we can't have multiple unfinished `CommitBuilder`
instance live at the same time. We don't have any such use cases yet,
and it's not hard to work around them, so I think this change is worth
it.
