This introduces multiple improvements to the drop targets.
## Hitbox shape
Currently, hitboxes are rectangles, where the vertical ones reach all
the way to the ends, which reduces the space for the horizontal ones,
making the hitboxes a bit awkward in the corners. This new approach just
determines the closest side.

## Hitbox size
The width of the hitbox was currently always 8 rem all around. In setups
with many columns or rows, or when the font size was very large, this
could potentially overlap the center hitbox, not allowing to drop a tab
without another split. Now the width of the hitboxes are a fraction of
the smaller size of its parents width and height. This makes sure the
hitboxes have the same width all around, but never fully block the
center hitbox.
I've also made this value configurable through the new
`drop_target_size` config which takes a `f32` fraction and is set to 0.2
by default.
Not sure if this is worth mentioning, but this technically allows to
remove the split hitboxes all together by setting it to `0.0`, or
removing the center hitbox by setting it to any value `>=0.5`. Not that
this is necessary, but it would be possible now.
## Larger visualization
The visual overlay when using one of the side hitboxes were also `8em`
wide. Since their logical size now changed, and it can't currently be
represented with GPUI (without abusing the `canvas` element), I made the
visual feedback take half of the width or height of the available space,
just like how other editors do this.
Also, the opacity/alpha value set by a theme is currently ignored. This
change now respects the themes opacity for it!
## Respect alpha value
Currently, the alpha value of `drop_target.background` is ignored. Even
the default themes set a value that is overwritten by a hard coded
value. I have removed this hard coded value and it now respects the
alpha value.

The letter fix is somewhat hacky: while it does the right thing right
now, it does not prevent us from future mistakes like these, and does
not explain why the bottom dock could be of one, smaller, height, and
its contents, the terminal pane/terminal element/something else would
think that it has a larger height, thus breaking the scrolling and
rendering.

This PR implements the Centered Layout feature (#4685):
- Added the `toggle centered layout` action.
- The centered layout mode only takes effect when there's a single
central pane.
- The state of the centered layout toggle is saved / restored between
Zed restarts.
- The paddings are controlled by the `centered_layout` setting:

The new setting accepts "last_workspace" (default) and "none" as
options.
In a follow-up PR I'll add a new option that re-launches all of the Zed
windows and not just the last one.

This PR reworks the way workspace notifications are identified to use a
new `NotificationId` type.
A `NotificationId` is bound to a given type that is used as a unique
identifier. Generally this will be a unit struct that can be used to
uniquely identify this notification.
A `NotificationId` can also accept an optional `ElementId` in order to
distinguish between different notifications of the same type.
This system avoids the issue we had previously of selecting `usize` IDs
somewhat arbitrarily and running the risk of having two independent
notifications collide (and thus interfere with each other).
This also fixes a bug where multiple suggestion notifications for the
same extension could be live at once

This panic has occured a handful of times, I think it must be the case
that:
1. Item is dropped outside of an update loop
2. The next update is this one
In that case no flush effects will have called the release observers
yet, but we cannot upgrade the WeakModel because the ref count is 0

This PR changes ways the Find/Replace functionality in the
Buffer/Project Search is accessible via shortcuts. It makes those panels
work the same way as in VS Code and Sublime Text.

`ctrl-r` for this purpose, though I'm not sure it's the best choice.

This puts the Linux platform implementation at a similar code style and
quality to the macOS platform. The largest change is that I collapsed
the `LinuxPlatform` -> `[Backend]` -> `[Backend]State` ->
`[Backend]StateInner` to just `[Backend]` and `[Backend]State`, and in
the process removed most of the `Rc`s and `RefCell`s.

This PR adds the ability for extensions to provide certain language
settings via the language `config.toml`.
These settings are then merged in with the rest of the settings when the
language is loaded from the extension.
The language settings that are available are:
- `tab_size`
- `hard_tabs`
- `soft_wrap`
Additionally, for bundled languages we moved these settings out of the
`settings/default.json` and into their respective `config.toml`s .
For languages currently provided by extensions, we are leaving the
values in the `settings/default.json` temporarily until all released
versions of Zed are able to load these settings from the extension.

slightly, introducing a new `SettingsSources` struct to better convey
where the settings are being loaded from.
This makes it easier to load settings from specific locations/sets of

Due to peculiarities in handling of terminal panes (namely the fact that
they are not actually tracked by the Workspace::active_pane member), it
was possible to get into a state where status bar items "lost track" of
an active pane item; one way to reproduce it was to open a new terminal
via "workspace: new terminal" with a pane open in a central view; once a
new terminal is opened, the language selector and line number indicator
lose track of an active item. Focusing central view does nothing - it
will only go away after switching a tab in the central view.
To remedy this, we now always notify the status bar items of a pane
focus change, even if Workspace::active_pane points to the same pane.

- maintain updated vim.workspace_state.search.initial_query
- modify editor.select_next_state with
vim.workspace_state.search.initial_query
- use editor.select_next()
- merge selections
- set editor.select_next_state to previous state
To make this possible, several private members and editor structures are
made public. `gN` is not yet implemented and the cursor still does not
jump to the next selection in the first use.

This pull request moves the computation of scrollbar markers off the
main thread, to prevent them from grinding the editor to a halt when we
have a lot of them (e.g., when there are lots of search results on a
large file). With these changes we also avoid generating multiple quads
for adjacent markers, thus fixing an issue where we stop drawing other
primitives because we've drawn too many quads in the scrollbar.

This PR adds the `pane_group.border` theme attribute that defines the
color of the borders between pane groups.
- Defaults to the `border` color, so nothing changes in the existing
themes.
- VSCode theme converter takes it from the `editorGroup.border`.

There was a problem using deferred draws with `overlay` and tooltips at
the same time.
The `overlay` element was removed and was split up into two separate
elements
- `deferred`
- `anchored` - Mimics the `overlay` behavior but does not render its
children as deferred
`tooltip_container` does not defer its drawing anymore and only uses
`anchored`.

The Tab Switcher implementation (#7653):
- `ctrl-tab` opens the Tab Switcher and moves selection to the
previously selcted tab. It also cycles selection forward.
- `ctrl-shift-tab` opens the Tab Switcher and moves selection to the
last tab in the list. It also cycles selection backward.
- Tab is selected and the Tab Switcher is closed on the shortcut
modifier key (`ctrl` by default) release.
- List items are in reverse activation history order.
- The list reacts to the item changes in background (new tab, tab
closed, tab title changed etc.)
Intentionally not in scope of this PR:
- File icons
- Close buttons
I will come back to these features. I think they need to be implemented
in separate PRs, and be synchronized with changes in how tabs are
rendered, to reuse the code as it's done in the current implementation.
The Tab Switcher looks usable even without them.
Known Issues:
Tab Switcher doesn't react to mouse click on a list item. It's not a tab
switcher specific problem, it looks like ctrl-clicks are not handled the
same way in Zed as cmd-clicks. For instance, menu items can be activated
with cmd-click, but don't react to ctrl-click. Since the Tab Switcher's
default keybinding is `ctrl-tab`, the user can only click an item with
`ctrl` pushed down, thus preventing `on_click()` from firing.

Sharing a project displays a notification (window) on every screen.
Previously there was an issue with the positioning of windows on all
screens except the primary screen.

@mikayla-maki and I also decided to refactor the `WindowOptions` a bit.
Previously you could specify bounds which controlled the positioning and
size of the window in the global coordinate space, while also providing
a display id (which screen to show the window on). This can lead to
unusual behavior because you could theoretically specify a global bound
which does not even belong to the display id which was provided.
Therefore we changed the api to this:

This pull request introduces a new `InlineCompletionProvider` trait,
which enables making `Editor` copilot-agnostic and lets us push all the
copilot functionality into the `copilot_ui` module. Long-term, I would
like to merge `copilot` and `copilot_ui`, but right now `project`
depends on `copilot`, which makes this impossible.
The reason for adding this new trait is so that we can experiment with
other inline completion providers and swap them at runtime using config
settings.
Please, note also that we renamed some of the existing copilot actions
to be more agnostic (see release notes below). We still kept the old
actions bound for backwards-compatibility, but we should probably remove
them at some later version.
Also, as a drive-by, we added new methods to the `Global` trait that let
you read or mutate a global directly, e.g.:

});
```

We're doing it. Svelte support is moving into an extension. This PR
fixes some issues that came up along the way.
Notes
* extensions need to be able to retrieve the path the `node` binary
installed by Zed
* previously we were silently swallowing any errors that occurred while
loading a grammar
* npm commands ran by extensions weren't run in the right directory
* Tree-sitter's WASM stdlib didn't support a C function (`strncmp`)
needed by the Svelte parser's external scanner
* the way that LSP installation status was reported was unnecessarily
complex

This reverts #9053 and #9375 because they introduced a regression on
`main` that broke the titlebars on macOS:

Two things are off:
- Left padding is missing
- Titlebar height is less than it was before, which means the
traffic-light buttons are not centered vertically
What @as-cii and I noticed while looking into this: the `cfg!(macos)`
macros that were used don't work like that. You need to check for
`cfg!(target = "macos")` etc. Means that on macOS we never used the
macOS-specific code because the condition was always false.
Overall height, we're not sure about.

The flickering was caused by the pane trying to restore focus on a
`FocusHandle` that wasn't being rendered anymore. This commit uses the
new `WeakFocusHandle` to avoid retaining a reference to focus handles
that don't exist anymore.

This is the beginning of setting up a flexible way to open items beyond
the text buffer -- think notebooks, images, GeoJSON, etc. The primary
requirement to allow opening an arbitrary file is `try_open` on the
`project::Item` trait. Now we can make new `Item`s for other types with
their own ways to render.
Under the hood, `register_project_item` uses this new opening scheme. It
supports a dynamic array of opener functions, that will handle specific
item types. By default, a `Buffer` should be able to be able to open any
file that another opener did not.
A key detail here is that the order of registration matters. The last
item has primacy. Here's an example:

workspace::register_project_item::<Notebook>(cx);
workspace::register_project_item::<ImageViewer>(cx);
```
When a project item (file) is attempted to be opened, it's first tried
with the `ImageViewer`, followed by the `Notebook`, then the `Editor`.
The tests are set up in a way that should make it _hopefully_ easy to
learn how to write a new opener. First to go after should probably be
image files.

Before this change, the hitbox felt one-sided because the cursor didn't
consistently change into the drag-handle cursor.
The reason was that we didn't trigger a redraw on hover, so we'd only
change the cursor if we detected hover AND something else caused a
redraw.

Before this change we didn't consistently trigger focus events when
toggling between with windows `Cmd-backtick`. We only triggered them
when the OS decided to trigger a redraw.
That lead to a nasty bug that showed up in Vim mode where a cursor would
still be active in the hidden window, even though it was deactivated.
One then had to manually try to trigger a focus event in the new window
to activate the cursor.
With this change, we call `cx.refresh` when the window activation status
changed which triggers focus events consistently and fixes this bug.
With logging we can observe this:

This fixes#8072 and #9061 by surfacing formatting errors in the
activity indicator.
It shows a message in the activity indicator if the last attempt
to format a buffer failed.
It only keeps track of the last attempt, so any further formatting
that succeeds will reset or update the error message.
I chose to only keep track of that, because everything else (keeping
track of formatting state per buffer, per project, per worktree) seems
complicated with little benefit, since we'd have to keep track of that
state, update it, clean it, etc.
We can still do that should we decide that we need to keep track
of the state on a per-buffer basis, but I think for now this is a
good, simple solution.
This also changes the `OpenLog` action to scroll to the end of the
buffer
and to not mark the buffer as dirty.

### Problem
After transitioning Zed to GPUI 2, we started noticing that interacting
with the mouse on many UI elements would lead to a pretty annoying
flicker. The main issue with the old approach was that hover state was
calculated based on the previous frame. That is, when computing whether
a given element was hovered in the current frame, we would use
information about the same element in the previous frame.
However, inspecting the previous frame tells us very little about what
should be hovered in the current frame, as elements in the current frame
may have changed significantly.
### Solution
This pull request's main contribution is the introduction of a new
`after_layout` phase when redrawing the window. The key idea is that
we'll give every element a chance to register a hitbox (see
`ElementContext::insert_hitbox`) before painting anything. Then, during
the `paint` phase, elements can determine whether they're the topmost
and draw their hover state accordingly.
We are also removing the ability to give an arbitrary z-index to
elements. Instead, we will follow the much simpler painter's algorithm.
That is, an element that gets painted after will be drawn on top of an
element that got painted earlier. Elements can still escape their
current "stacking context" by using the new `ElementContext::defer_draw`
method (see `Overlay` for an example). Elements drawn using this method
will still be logically considered as being children of their original
parent (for keybinding, focus and cache invalidation purposes) but their
layout and paint passes will be deferred until the currently-drawn
element is done.
With these changes we also reworked geometry batching within the
`Scene`. The new approach uses an AABB tree to determine geometry
occlusion, which allows the GPU to render non-overlapping geometry in
parallel.
### Performance
Performance is slightly better than on `main` even though this new
approach is more correct and we're maintaining an extra data structure
(the AABB tree).

## Problem
We're trying to figure out why we sometimes see high latency when
collaborating, even though the collab server logs indicate that messages
are not taking long to process.
We think that high volumes of certain types of messages, including
`UpdateFollowers` may cause a lot of messages to queue up, causing
delays before collab sees certain messages.
## Fix
This PR reduces the number of `UpdateFollowers` messages that clients
send to collab when scrolling around or moving the cursor, using a
time-based throttle.
The downside of this change is that scrolling will not be as smooth when
following someone. The advantage is that it will be much easier to keep
up with the stream of updates, since they will be sent much less
frequently.

This PR moves the Clippy configuration up to the workspace level.
We're using the [`lints`
table](https://doc.rust-lang.org/cargo/reference/workspaces.html#the-lints-table)
to configure the Clippy ruleset in the workspace's `Cargo.toml`.
Each crate in the workspace now has the following in their own
`Cargo.toml` to inherit the lints from the workspace:

```
This allows for configuring rust-analyzer to show Clippy lints in the
editor by using the following configuration in your Zed `settings.json`:

This PR includes just the static runnables part. We went with **not**
having a dedicated panel for runnables.
This is just a 1st PR out of N, as we want to start exploring the
dynamic runnables front. Still, all that work is going to happen once
this gets merged.

On macOS, this will enable or disable the Metal HUD at runtime. Note
that this only works when Zed is bundled because it requires to set the
`MetalHudEnabled` key in the Info.plist.

This PR changes our approach to initializing the `SystemAppearance` so
that we can do it earlier in the startup process.
Previously we were using the appearance from the window, meaning that we
couldn't initialize the value until we first opened the window.
Now we read the `window_appearance` from the `AppContext`. On macOS this
is backed by the
[`effectiveAppearance`](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/appkit/nsapplication/2967171-effectiveappearance)
on the `NSApplication`.
We currently still watch for changes to the appearance at the window
level, as the only hook I could find in the documentation is
[`viewDidChangeEffectiveAppearance`](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/appkit/nsview/2977088-viewdidchangeeffectiveappearance),
which is at the `NSView` level.
In my testing this makes it so Zed appropriately chooses the correct
light/dark theme on startup.

Before this change if you had joined a call with an empty workspace,
then we'd prompt you to hang up when you tried to open a recent project.

This PR adds support for configuring both a light and dark theme in
`settings.json`.
In addition to accepting just a theme name, the `theme` field now also
accepts an object in the following form:

```
Both `light` and `dark` are required, and indicate which theme should be
used when the system is in light mode and dark mode, respectively.
The `mode` field is optional and indicates which theme should be used:

appearance.
- `"light"` - Use the theme indicated by the `light` field.
- `"dark"` - Use the theme indicated by the `dark` field.

This change makes it so that if you are the first to join a channel,
your project is automatically shared.
It also makes it so that if you join a channel via a link and there are
no shared projects, you open the notes instead of an empty workspace
with nothing.
This is to try and address the discoverability of project sharing: we've
had
two reviews that have talked about channels, but not talked about
sharing
projects into them, which makes me suspect they didn't know about the
feature.

This is a follow-up to #7141 and fixes the focus-switching to docks in
case they haven't been focused before.

This adds the ability to navigate to/from docks (Terminal, Project,
Collaboration, Assistant) via keybindings.
When using the `ActivatePaneInDirection` keybinding from the
left/bottom/right dock, we check whether the movement is towards the
center panel. If it is, we focus the last active pane.

## Drawback

Older Zed versions may send a buffer id of 0, which is no-longer
supported. (as of #6993)
This doesn't fix that, but it does ensure that we don't panic in the
workspace by maintaining the invariant that from_proto_state returns
Some(Task) if the variant matches.
It also converts the panic to an error should something similar happen
again in the future.

Since our last measurements, startup time in Zed had regressed quite
significantly. This was due to several issues:
- We were loading IBMPlex, which we're not really using in the UI.
- Images were being parsed in the foreground, thus blocking the main
thread
- Language models (for semantic index and assistant) were being loaded
in the foreground, thus blocking the main thread
- Interaction with the keychain was blocking the main thread
In addition to these, with this pull request we will now deserialize the
items for a pane in parallel, as opposed to doing so sequentially.
All combined, when running the zed binary directly this brings startup
time from ~350ms to ~210ms on my machine.

This time around, we address the flicker seen in #3857 by querying the active item (that might've just been added),
as it knows whether it has focus even if the parent Pane does not.

Previously, the tab bar buttons would stay when the chat panel was
opened (and received focus) until something else was drawn (or caused a
render?)
With this change, the tab bar buttons are only shown if the pane was
focus.
I'm not sure about the side-effects of this, but the toolbar still seems
to work fine.
